Bermuda Tariffs

  • Bermuda’s Customs Department collects import duty, which makes up approximately twenty percent of the GOB’s revenue.

  • Customs duty is normally calculated on an ad valorem basis, generally on the transaction value of imported goods.
  • Vehicles principally designed for the transport of passengers are normally dutiable at the rate of 75 percent on the first $10,000 and 150 percent on the value in excess of $10,000 (vehicles with ten or more seats and hybrid vehicles are at 33.5 percent).
  • Vehicles principally designed for the transport of goods are normally dutiable at 33.5 percent. The duty on motorcycles is 33.5 percent.

Weekly exchange rates for Importer

All importers must use the current exchange rates for the conversion of foreign currency into terms of Bermuda dollars when determining the customs value of goods imported during the period indicated.

Exemption from duty when moving to Bermuda

Bermuda Import Regulations: The returning residents and non-residents at certain circumstances may be entitled to duty free on their used motor vehicle. If you are a returning resident you will need proof that you have been living overseas for more than one year.

If you are a first-time resident, you will need

  • Proof that you have permission to live in Bermuda (work permit, spousal letter etc).
  • Proof that your vehicle are older than six months if claiming relief.

If you are shipping your used car from overseas and claiming relief, you will need a copy of your Transfer of Residence Certificate. You must ask a customs officer for this certificate at the airport, when you arrive to take up residence. There is no fee for the certificate. This certificate is processed immediately.
