Duties & Taxes

Used Cars Import Duties And Taxes in Austria

  • The shipment is free of duties only in connection with a move.
  • Vehicles must be in use and possession of the shipper for at least 6 months in the origin country.
  • A tax called “Normverbrauchsabgabe” (NOVA) or a standard consumption tax (between 8 and 14% of the actual value) must be paid at the time of registration.
  • NOVA is calculated on the average gas consumption of the individual model.
  • The owner of the car must have lived outside the EC for at least 1 year.
  • The vehicle must be cleared separately from the household goods and personal effects.
  • After Customs clearance, motor vehicles, including automobiles, motorcycles, motor scooters, and mopeds, cannot be sold or transferred unless Customs duties and VAT are paid.
  • A separate Customs clearance at a qualified Customs office is required (not every Customs office is authorised for Customs clearance).
  • If the shipper is arriving to Austria via personal vehicle, an application should be made to the Austrian Frontier Customs Office for a Form T 1.

  • Passport & International Driver’s Permit
  • Commercial/Purchase Invoice
  • Certificate of Title and Registration
  • Grundlagenbescheid – A Notice of basis of Assessment, must be applied at a customs office at the origin
  • Entry certificate from the local Police Station
  • Austrian License plates – Application completed immediately, plates from the country of origin must also be available
  • Letter from Employer stating length of stay abroad for at least one year.

    When importing a motor vehicle from a third country, you must complete the following documentation and customs formalities

    • Proof of value (invoice with payment confirmation, purchase agreement).
    • T1 consignment note (documentation that accompanies the vehicle from the point it crosses the border to the destination customs office, form Za 58a).
    • Import declaration (customs clearance application, form Za 58a).
    • If necessary, proof of preferential origin in order to secure a preferential customs duty rate (EUR1 movement certificate or declaration of origin on the invoice for a value of EUR 6,000).
